Solar vs AC Traffic Signals for Remote and Temporary Projects

Solar power can simplify deployment where grid power is unavailable, while AC systems may be the safer choice for high-load, shaded or permanently serviced intersections. The right answer comes from a site survey, not a headline price.

Quick decision: use solar when sunlight, autonomy and maintenance access are predictable. Use AC when the site has dependable grid power, high continuous demand or strict controller integration that is easier to support from the cabinet.

1. Survey the site before selecting power

Record latitude, seasonal solar exposure, shade from buildings or trees, panel orientation, theft risk, wind exposure, temperature, rainfall and access for maintenance. Also record the required signal diameter, aspect count, flash schedule, controller type and expected daily operating hours.

2. Size the solar system around autonomy

Solar sizing should cover the signal load, controller, communications and local losses while retaining a reserve for cloudy days. Ask for the design autonomy in hours or days, battery chemistry, low-voltage protection and replacement plan. A panel that works in summer may not provide the same reserve during the local rainy season.

3. Plan the electrical interface

A solar signal still needs a defined controller interface. Confirm DC voltage, charging controller, battery disconnect, output channels, flashing mode and any remote monitoring. 4. Choose by project type

  • Rural or off-grid crossing: solar can avoid long cable runs; prioritize autonomy and anti-theft design.
  • Temporary work zone: portable solar or battery equipment can reduce setup time; confirm transport, anchoring and flash visibility.
  • Permanent urban network: AC normally simplifies coordination, cabinet monitoring and maintenance access.
  • Warning installation: compare duty cycle and visibility; a lower-energy flashing application may use a smaller power system.

5. Include total cost and service

Compare trenching, poles, panel and battery replacement, cleaning, inspection, spare parts, security and winter performance. A lower purchase price is not a lower project cost if the battery must be replaced frequently or the site cannot be reached for service.

Can a solar signal use the same LED head as an AC signal?

Often the optical housing can be similar, but the power supply, controller and wiring must be selected for the actual DC or AC system.

How many cloudy days should the battery cover?

The project owner should set the autonomy target based on local weather and safety requirements. Request a calculation rather than assuming a universal number.

Is solar always better for remote roads?

No. Solar is attractive when trenching is expensive, but a shaded site, high load or difficult battery service may make another power strategy more reliable.
