Bicycle Traffic Signals for Urban Intersections

A bicycle signal should be unmistakable to cyclists without being confused with a vehicle or pedestrian indication. The safest specification starts with the cycle movement and phase plan, then defines the bicycle symbol, optical size, color sequence, mounting position and controller interface. GAOQIAO offers several red and green bicycle signal configurations for project review.

Use this table to organize the first technical discussion. The approved project drawing and local requirements always take priority.

Define the bicycle movement first

Show the protected bicycle movement on the intersection drawing and identify which signal head controls it. Confirm whether cyclists move parallel to pedestrians, receive a separate phase or share part of the vehicle sequence. This determines the required color order and prevents a product from being selected only by appearance.

The bicycle symbol should match local regulations and be approved before production. Provide artwork or a referenced standard when a particular symbol shape is mandatory. If the signal combines bicycle, pedestrian or countdown information in one assembly, include a front-layout drawing that shows every indication.

Select size, sections and mounting

Smaller bicycle indications can be appropriate at short viewing distances, while 300 mm or 400 mm faces may be requested for a wider approach or a combined assembly. The project designer should confirm the required size. State whether the product uses a single bi-color face, separate red and green sections, or a multi-section head with a countdown display.

Mounting position is especially important because the indication must be visible to cyclists but should not create ambiguity for drivers in adjacent lanes. Confirm mounting height, lateral offset, pole or bracket arrangement, visor direction and the expected viewing cone.

Coordinate the complete system

Operating voltage, cable routing, terminal arrangement and controller outputs should be reviewed together. A countdown display requires a defined timing source and behavior at phase changes. For solar or wireless installations, also provide the operating schedule, site sunlight information and required autonomy so the complete power arrangement can be evaluated.

A useful request for quotation includes the cycle-lane plan, symbol drawing, signal schedule, quantity, voltage, mounting details, applicable standard and delivery destination. This information supports a precise configuration review and reduces revisions after production begins.
