LED Traffic Signal Certification and Procurement Checklist
Certification marks are useful only when their scope matches the exact product and destination market. This checklist helps buyers organize the documents and questions needed before approving LED traffic signals.
1. Confirm the applicable standard and project authority
Begin with the tender, road authority specification and destination-market rules. EN 12368 may be relevant for certain European-oriented projects, while other projects may reference local standards, ITE practices or a purchaser鈥檚 own test plan. Record the required diameter, aspect count, optical performance, environmental class and test method.
2. Request a document pack, not a single certificate

3. Understand common labels
CE is a market-conformity declaration for applicable European requirements, not a universal performance certificate. RoHS addresses restricted substances in applicable electrical and electronic equipment. IP ratings describe protection against ingress under defined test conditions; they do not automatically prove impact resistance, salt spray or long-term outdoor life. EN 12368 should be checked against the applicable signal type and project edition.
4. Verify the physical product
- Housing material, visor and mounting-hole pattern.
- Lens/optical face, colour sequence and arrow or pedestrian symbol.
- Gasket, cable gland, drainage and service access.
- Label, serial number and batch traceability.
- Packaging protection for the destination route.
5. Build acceptance into the purchase order
Write the acceptance criteria into the PO: approved drawing, sample or first-article inspection, electrical test, visual inspection, quantity tolerance, packing photos and document delivery. If the project uses a third-party inspection agency, define the inspection point before production starts.

FAQ
Does CE mean the signal is approved for every road project?
No. CE relates to applicable European conformity requirements. The road authority can still require additional tests, documents or local approval.
Is IP65 enough for a coastal installation?
Not necessarily. Ask about corrosion protection, UV exposure, salt spray and the actual housing material in addition to ingress protection.
What should be printed on the product label?
At minimum, include model, rated voltage, manufacturer and traceability information required by the project. Confirm the label format before mass production.
