Traffic Signal Controller Compatibility Guide for LED Signals
A traffic signal is only reliable when the signal head and the controller agree on voltage, outputs, wiring and timing. Use this guide to organize the technical check before an RFQ, replacement project or intersection upgrade.
1. Start with the controller interface
Ask for the controller model, output type and the approved wiring diagram. A three-aspect vehicle signal may require separate red, yellow and green outputs, while an arrow, pedestrian or countdown indication can use additional channels. If the project is replacing an existing head, photograph the terminal block and record the wire labels before requesting a quotation.

2. Match signal type to the required phase
Define the indication in plain language: red/yellow/green ball, left or right arrow, full arrow, pedestrian figure, bicycle symbol, countdown or warning flasher. The housing diameter and number of sections are separate decisions. A 300 mm housing can contain different optical faces, so the quotation should name every section.
- Vehicle movement: commonly three aspects, with optional arrows or countdowns.
- Pedestrian crossing: red/green figure or approved local symbol; confirm push-button and audible interface separately.
- Warning or temporary control: flashing mode, battery/solar supply and portable mounting often matter more than cabinet integration.
3. Confirm environmental and mechanical compatibility
Controller compatibility is not only electrical. Confirm the mounting bracket, visor, backboard, cable entry, service access and local protection requirements. For coastal or tropical locations, ask about sealing, drainage, UV resistance and operating temperature. For replacement work, compare the rear housing dimensions and mounting-hole pattern with the existing pole hardware.
4. What to include in an RFQ
- Project country, authority and applicable standard.
- Signal diameter and number of sections per face.
- Indication for each section, including arrow direction or pedestrian symbol.
- Controller brand/model, output voltage and wiring diagram.
- Quantity, mounting arrangement, cable length and connector preference.
- Required inspection documents, sample approval and delivery destination.
5. Factory verification before shipment
Request a wiring drawing, photometric or electrical data applicable to the selected model, a powered sample video and a packing photo showing the label.
