Traffic Signal Controller Selection Guide

The controller is the operating center of a traffic signal system. Choosing it by the number of output terminals alone can produce an incomplete or unsafe design. The phase plan, signal loads, supply voltage, cabinet, pedestrian inputs, communications and fault behavior must be reviewed together. GAOQIAO supplies compact wired controllers, cabinet systems and solar-wireless options for different project types.

Quick selection matrix

Use this table to organize the first technical discussion. The approved project drawing and local requirements always take priority.

Translate the intersection plan into I/O

Begin with the approved phase diagram and signal-head schedule. Count each independently controlled vehicle, arrow, pedestrian, bicycle and countdown movement, then identify detector, push-button and external-control inputs. Outputs that always switch together may share a channel only when the approved design permits it. Reserve capacity can be useful for later additions, but it should not replace a clear I/O schedule.

Provide the maximum load for each output and the total connected load. Confirm AC or DC operation, nominal voltage, frequency, switching method and protection requirements. Mixing a controller and signal heads from different systems requires particular attention to leakage current, dim illumination, inrush current and terminal compatibility.

Choose cabinet and communication functions

A compact controller may suit a gate, parking site, factory road or simple temporary installation. A public-road junction can require a larger cabinet, power distribution, surge protection, conflict monitoring, ventilation, service access and approved field terminals. State the required enclosure material, ingress protection, mounting foundation and environmental limits.

Where synchronization, wireless coordination, remote monitoring or solar operation is requested, describe the exact function and network environment. Confirm communication distance, topology, protocol, time synchronization, event records and behavior after a communication failure. Avoid specifying a product only as smart or adaptive without a written functional requirement.

Acceptance and configuration records

Request a phase table, wiring diagram, terminal schedule, cabinet drawing and parameter backup for the delivered configuration. Factory testing should verify the programmed sequence, intergreen or clearance periods, pedestrian operation, manual control, power interruption response and defined conflict behavior. Site commissioning should repeat the checks with the installed signal loads.

For a precise quotation, send the intersection drawing, phase plan, I/O list, signal voltages and loads, required programs, detector or push-button details, communication requirement, cabinet specification, applicable standard, quantity and destination. GAOQIAO can then match the request to an available controller platform or identify where customization is required.
