Plan the signal head, pole, wiring and controller as one approved system before installation. This guide turns the project drawing into a clear site and acceptance checklist.

1. Confirm the project information before site work
Start with the approved junction drawing, signal schedule, phase plan, mounting arrangement and applicable road standard. Confirm the number of vehicle, arrow, pedestrian, bicycle and countdown indications, their positions and the viewing direction.
Record the signal diameter, aspect count, housing material, visor, mounting bracket, cable entry, operating voltage, controller model, quantity and destination. A product photograph alone is not enough to confirm a safe installation.
2. Prepare foundations, poles and mounting hardware
Set out foundations and pole positions from the approved layout. Verify excavation, anchor bolts, concrete strength, drainage, clearance from utilities and the required working zone before lifting equipment.
Check pole height, outreach, arm orientation, bracket load, wind exposure and access for future service. The signal head must be level, visible from the approach and protected from accidental contact with nearby structures.
3. Mount signal heads and confirm indication layout
Install the housing, visor and bracket without twisting the body. Confirm the order of red, yellow and green sections, arrow direction, pedestrian or bicycle symbol and any countdown position against the signal schedule.
For replacement work, compare the existing face size, fixing points, cable route and connector arrangement. Do not assume that two products with the same nominal diameter have the same mounting or wiring details.
4. Complete wiring and protection
Label every cable at both ends and keep the terminal schedule with the cabinet drawing. Separate power, signal outputs, detector inputs, push-button circuits and communication cables according to the approved design.
Confirm conductor size, polarity where applicable, protective earth, surge protection, isolation, waterproof cable glands and enclosure sealing. Test continuity and insulation before connecting the signal heads to the controller.
5. Check controller compatibility
Match the controller output type, nominal voltage, load range, switching method and terminal arrangement to the signal head. A countdown display may use learning, trigger, communication or independent timing; confirm the actual interface before energizing it.
For red-cross-green-arrow or lane-control applications, map each independently controlled indication to the correct output and document the safe state after a power or communication fault. The phase table and I/O schedule should be approved before commissioning.
6. Commissioning and acceptance tests
Test each color, arrow, pedestrian and bicycle indication at the installed viewing distance. Verify brightness, dark appearance, countdown timing, conflict monitoring, manual control, detector inputs, push buttons and emergency or flashing modes where included.
Record the measured supply voltage, controller program, terminal checks, lamp test, power interruption response and any corrective action. Keep photographs of the completed installation with the as-built drawing for future traceability.
7. Tunnel and underpass traffic signals
Tunnel and underpass sites require extra attention to viewing distance, luminance contrast, moisture, ventilation, cable routing, emergency power and maintenance access. Confirm whether the tunnel signal is a standard three-aspect head, lane-control indication, red-cross-green-arrow unit or a special warning arrangement.
Coordinate the signal sequence with tunnel control, fire and ventilation systems. Define the response to a communication loss, power loss, smoke event or maintenance mode and verify that the installed indication is visible in the tunnel lighting environment.
8. Red-cross-green-arrow and lane-control signals
Use a dedicated signal schedule for red cross, green arrow, lane-open or lane-closed indications. Confirm symbol orientation, aspect count, interlocking logic, controller outputs and the required fail-safe state before the cabinet is programmed.
