Document the user journey
Start at the waiting area and follow the complete crossing route. Identify the push-button position, kerb ramp, crossing direction, refuge island, pole location and destination point. The design should make the request device and the correct crossing direction understandable without depending on visual signal information alone.
Local accessibility rules and the road authority specification take priority. Provide the required standard, approved sound pattern, tactile indication, volume behavior, activation logic and any night-time restriction. These requirements vary by market and should never be assumed from a generic product photograph.
Coordinate visual, audible and tactile functions
The pedestrian signal head still needs a clear red and green indication with an approved symbol. An accessible system may additionally require an audible locator tone, crossing tone, tactile arrow, vibrating surface or other approved feedback. Clearly state which functions are mandatory and whether they operate continuously, only after a request, or according to time-of-day settings.
Where push buttons are used, identify contact type, supply voltage, ingress-protection requirement, mounting height and controller input. If more than one crossing is located at the same junction, label each request and response channel so that audible or tactile feedback cannot be assigned to the wrong movement.
Prepare a system-level inquiry
Provide the intersection drawing, accessible route, pedestrian phase timing, controller model, I/O schedule, signal-head requirements, push-button locations, required sound or tactile behavior, quantity and applicable standard. Photos of the site can support the review but should not replace the drawing.
