Square vs Round 200mm Traffic Signal Heads: What Should a Buyer Compare?
For a 200mm signal, the illuminated indication and its required visibility matter more than whether the outer housing is square or round. Housing shape becomes decisive when it affects the existing mounting system, maintenance access or a project's approved appearance.
Look beyond the front photograph
Two heads can both be called “200mm” while using different rear-door profiles, bracket interfaces, visor attachments and cable entries. Ask for front, side and rear drawings. Check total width and depth, not just the nominal lens diameter. An overly deep replacement head can interfere with a mast arm, wall or adjacent signal.
Where an existing junction uses round housings, a square replacement may require a new bracket or different opening clearance. The reverse is also true. For a new project, an approved rendering can establish a consistent appearance; for a retrofit, preserving the original mounting geometry is often the simpler route.
Check service access
Ask how the LED module is removed, whether the door can open after installation, and which seal or fastener needs replacement during service. A neat exterior is of little value if a technician cannot reach the rear panel once the head is on the pole.
The visor and backing board are separate decisions. Compare how each proposed combination frames the indication against the actual background. Request day and night sample images if visual appearance is part of the approval. Do not assume one housing shape always offers better optical performance: that depends on the lens, module, visor and viewing geometry.
Use a side-by-side comparison sheet
For each option, record overall dimensions, mounting hole pattern, supply rating, module type, door access, visor style, spare-part reference and packing size. Include the drawing revision in the purchase order. This prevents a nominally equivalent 200mm head from arriving with an incompatible rear interface.
