Choose the panel, battery, controller, synchronization method and portable structure together so a temporary or off-grid signal remains visible and available through the planned operating period.

1. Define the operating profile

Record the signal size, indication type, daily operating hours, flashing or steady mode, expected traffic volume, seasonal sunlight, ambient temperature and required autonomy. Temporary work-zone systems may have a very different duty cycle from a permanent off-grid junction.

State whether the project needs vehicle, arrow, pedestrian, bicycle, countdown or warning-flasher indications. Include the safe state after a low-battery, controller, communication or panel fault.

2. Size the solar panel and battery

Estimate daily energy from every signal head, controller, wireless unit and auxiliary device. Select panel capacity for the least favorable solar period rather than the average sunny day, and reserve charging margin for dust, shading and temperature.

Specify battery chemistry, usable capacity, low-voltage protection, enclosure ventilation, expected cycle life and replacement access. A battery autonomy statement should identify the assumed load and operating hours.

3. Match the solar controller and signal loads

Confirm the DC voltage, output channels, maximum load, charging mode, protection and connector arrangement. The controller should prevent deep discharge and should provide a defined behavior when the battery or communication link is unavailable.

For a wireless or synchronized system, document the network topology, range, antenna position, clock source, synchronization interval and recovery behavior. Avoid using the word synchronized without an agreed timing method and test procedure.

4. Plan synchronization and safe operation

Set the timing source, phase plan, start-up sequence, manual override and flashing mode before deployment. Test the system with the actual signal load and record the timing offset between units.

Define what happens after a lost radio link, controller restart, low battery or emergency stop. Temporary systems should fail to a predictable, visible and safe indication rather than continue with an unknown phase.

5. Portable work-zone deployment

Check the trailer or base stability, ballast, wheel or lifting arrangement, transport dimensions, leveling, wind exposure and cable protection. Provide a short site plan showing the approach distance, stop line, pedestrian route and maintenance access.

Use high-visibility housing and signs where required by the local traffic-control plan. Confirm that the signal remains visible through dust, rain, glare and the expected approach geometry.

6. Solar warning flashers and barricade lights

For curve, hazard, barricade or road-work warnings, select the lens color, flash sequence, viewing direction, panel position, battery autonomy and mounting method. A sequential or synchronized flasher should have its trigger, timing and recovery behavior documented.

7. Site acceptance and maintenance

At handover, measure charging current, battery voltage, output voltage, signal visibility, synchronization offset and low-voltage protection. Photograph the panel orientation, controller enclosure, cable glands and completed installation.

Provide a maintenance interval for panel cleaning, battery inspection, fastener checks, firmware or timing review and replacement parts. Keep the autonomy calculation with the commissioning record so later changes can be assessed.
