1. Identify the road user and indication

Confirm whether the crossing serves pedestrians, cyclists, a shared path or multiple movements. Choose the approved red and green figure, bicycle symbol, arrow or combined face and record the viewing direction and aspect count.

The signal diameter, housing and visor should be selected with the approach distance, mounting height, background lighting and local standard in mind. Do not treat a product title as proof of compliance.

2. Choose countdown behavior

Define whether the countdown shows remaining walk time, clearance time, a two-digit value or a controller-supplied phase. Confirm the timing source, trigger or communication interface and what appears during a restart or lost signal.

Check digit size, viewing distance, brightness, night dimming and mounting relationship to the pedestrian face. A countdown needs to be reviewed with the controller and phase plan, not selected as a standalone accessory.

3. Plan audible and accessible guidance

For an accessible crossing, confirm the audible tone or voice, volume adjustment, locator function, quiet period and the relationship between sound and the visual walk indication. The local accessibility standard and site noise environment should guide the final setting.

Coordinate the speaker, tactile or push-button unit, cable route and maintenance access. Document the test method so the installer can verify audibility without creating a nuisance for nearby properties.

4. Consider red down-light and visibility details

A red down-light or supplementary red indication may be requested for a specific crossing layout. Confirm its purpose, symbol, optical position, controller output and local approval before including it in the signal schedule.

Review lens, visor, contrast, night dimming, backboard and mounting angle. Pedestrian signals should be legible from the waiting area and from the approach used by wheelchair users, children and cyclists.

5. Integrate push buttons and controller inputs

Specify normally-open or normally-closed behavior, latching or non-latching operation, request confirmation, tactile feedback, indicator lamps and the cable distance to the controller. Confirm the input voltage and protection before wiring.

The push-button request must be reflected in the phase plan and acceptance test. Record the request, cancel, re-call, fault and power-restart behavior so the installer can verify the complete crossing sequence.

6. Bicycle and shared-path crossings

A bicycle indication may need a separate face, combined pedestrian-bicycle face, red/green bicycle symbol or a dedicated countdown. Confirm the lane arrangement, stop line, approach speed and whether pedestrians and cyclists have separate phases.

Use the signal schedule and pavement marking plan to verify symbol direction, mounting height and the correct controller output. Similar-looking red/green faces can require different timing and wiring.

7. Installation and acceptance checklist

Before handover, test visual indications, countdown timing, audible output, push-button requests, tactile feedback, dimming, fault state and controller logs. Check visibility from the waiting line and the full approach path.
