Pedestrian Signal Selection for School Zones and Accessible Crossings

A pedestrian crossing works best when the visible indication, timing plan, activation method and physical placement are selected around the people using the crossing.

Begin with the crossing plan

Before selecting a display, identify the crossing width, traffic speed, number of stages, refuge islands, typical user groups and controller sequence. This prevents a product-only decision from overlooking timing, mounting or accessibility requirements.

Visibility is more than LED brightness

Signal visibility depends on symbol size, contrast, lens design, mounting height, orientation, background clutter and direct sunlight. A good design gives pedestrians enough time to identify the indication before they step into the crossing. Confirm the viewing direction at the planned waiting position, not only from the vehicle approach.

Coordinate signal timing with the actual crossing distance

The controller timing plan should reflect the crossing length and project rules. The equipment supplier can review interfaces and display behavior, but the approved signal plan and local authority requirements determine the safe operating sequence. Countdown values must never be set independently of that approved plan.

Specify the activation method

Push buttons, passive detection and fixed-time modes serve different projects. If a button is used, confirm its mounting position, feedback indicator, weather protection, cable route and interface voltage. For an accessible crossing, additional audible or tactile equipment should be selected only after reviewing the applicable local requirement.
