IP rating is only one part of the result

An enclosure rating describes a tested assembly, not every field connection. A signal head can have a suitable housing and still fail because a gland is loose, a connector is exposed or a cable carries water into the cabinet. Specify the complete installation detail, including cable diameter, sealing method and drainage.

Select glands and connectors as a set

Match the gland range to the actual cable outside diameter and use the sealing insert supplied for that range. Choose connectors with the required voltage, current, locking and environmental performance. Do not mix seals from different systems unless the manufacturer approves the combination.

Use a drip loop and controlled entry

  • Leave a downward loop before an upward cable entry so water cannot run directly into the gland.
  • Keep the entry point above splash and standing-water levels.
  • Support the cable close to the entry so vibration does not loosen the seal.
  • Close unused openings with the correct blanking plug.

Inside the signal head

Keep connectors away from the lowest point of the housing. Route conductors so condensation cannot pool on terminals, and avoid sharp bends that stress crimp contacts. Confirm the lens, visor, rear cover and gasket are seated evenly. If a drain feature is part of the approved housing design, keep it clear rather than sealing it with an improvised compound.

Commissioning checklist

CheckWhat good looks like
GlandCable is centred, strain-relieved and cannot be pulled out by hand.
ConnectorLock is fully engaged; unused contacts are protected.
HousingGasket is clean, continuous and evenly compressed.
RoutingDrip loop, bend radius and support are visible in the inspection photo.

Maintenance after harsh weather

Inspect the first installations after heavy rain, coastal exposure, dust storms or pressure washing. Look for water marks, green corrosion, cracked seals and intermittent colour faults. Replace damaged seals and re-terminate corroded connectors rather than spraying a temporary coating over them.

FAQs

Can silicone replace a proper cable gland?

No. Sealant may be part of an approved detail, but it is not a substitute for correct mechanical sealing and strain relief.

Why does water appear inside a dry housing?

Temperature changes can create condensation. Check the gasket, cable path, drainage and whether the housing was closed while wet.
