Why the complete path matters

A traffic signal installation is a connected system. A cabinet may be correctly bonded while a long field cable, metal pole or remote detector remains exposed. Plan the protection path from the incoming supply through the controller and out to every external circuit. The approved electrical design and local code always take priority.

Map the exposure zones

List mains entry, communications, detector loops, pedestrian devices, signal-head outputs and any solar or battery interface. Mark which cables leave the cabinet, which run beside metalwork and which cross open or elevated areas. This map helps the engineer select protection at the correct boundary instead of adding an isolated device with no discharge path.

Bonding and protective earth

  • Bond the cabinet, door, back plate and nearby metalwork with short, secure conductors.
  • Keep protective earth conductors separate from signal reference conductors unless the design explicitly joins them.
  • Remove paint or oxidation only at approved bonding points and protect the finished joint against corrosion.
  • Use labelled test points so maintenance teams can verify continuity without guessing.

Surge protective devices

Choose the SPD type, voltage rating, short-circuit capability and coordination based on the supply system and local requirements. The connection to earth should be short and straight; long loops reduce performance. For field circuits, confirm that the device is compatible with the controller output and does not create leakage that triggers a conflict monitor.

Routing and cabinet layout

Route incoming power, protected signal conductors and communications in an orderly way. Keep high-energy entry wiring away from low-level communication wiring, cross at a controlled angle where necessary and provide strain relief at glands. Leave enough service loop for replacement without disturbing the protection layout.

Commissioning and maintenance

  1. Verify continuity and bonding against the approved drawing.
  2. Check SPD status indicators and record serial numbers.
  3. Test controller channels with the connected load.
  4. Inspect glands, labels and cable screens after the first severe storm.
Do not copy a generic earthing sketch blindly. Soil conditions, supply system, cabinet class and local authority requirements can change the correct design.
