One-lane, two-way traffic control

A one-lane two-way traffic signal system must prevent both approaches from receiving green at the same time. Record the travel distance through the controlled section, calculate the clearance interval for the slowest permitted vehicle and verify the all-red changeover before opening the lane to traffic.

Vehicle-actuated portable traffic signals can shorten queues by extending or calling green only when detectors identify demand. The traffic plan should define detector position, maximum green, minimum green, fallback timing and the operating mode used after detector or radio failure. Fixed-time operation remains appropriate where traffic flow is predictable or detection cannot be installed reliably.

Visibility and placement

Set the signal heads so the approach sight distance, mounting height, visor orientation and lateral clearance match the approved plan. Check visibility in sun, rain and darkness. Keep portable bases outside the vehicle recovery area and protect cables from traffic, plant and water.

Timing and synchronization

Document the cycle, offset, clearance interval and manual override. For two-way single-lane working, confirm that both ends cannot display a conflicting release. If wireless synchronization is used, record the pairing, fallback mode and battery status. A work-zone signal should fail to a safe, clearly defined state.

Daily inspection

  • Check head alignment, lens cleanliness and visibility from the decision point.
  • Confirm battery or mains status and inspect cables, bases and barriers.
  • Run the approved sequence and test manual or emergency controls.
  • Look for water ingress, impact damage, tampering and changed site geometry.
  • Record the inspection and close any defect before the next shift.

Removal and handover

When the work ends, disable the temporary timing only after the authority confirms the permanent arrangement. Photograph the final condition, collect batteries safely and keep the inspection record with the project file.
