An outdoor traffic signal lives in the rain, dust, humidity and temperature swings for years. If water or dust gets inside the housing, the LEDs corrode, the electronics fail and the signal goes dark. The IP rating is the single specification that tells you how well a signal survives the weather—and choosing too low a rating is a common cause of premature field failure.

This guide explains what the IP digits mean and how to choose the right rating for your installation.

What the IP rating means

IP stands for Ingress Protection, defined by the international standard IEC 60529. The rating has two digits. The first digit (0–6) rates protection against solid objects and dust; the second digit (0–9) rates protection against water. The higher each digit, the better the protection.

Decoding the digits for traffic signals

First digit — dust and solid protection

For outdoor signals you want the highest dust rating. A rating of 5 means "dust protected"—some dust may enter but not enough to affect operation. A rating of 6 means "dust-tight"—no dust enters at all. In dusty roadsides, deserts or construction zones, dust-tight (6) is the safer choice.

Second digit — water protection

The water digit is where IP54 and IP65 differ. A rating of 4 means protected against splashing water from any direction. A rating of 5 means protected against low-pressure water jets from any direction. Higher ratings such as 6 (powerful jets) and 7 (temporary immersion) exist for harsher exposure.

Which rating does an outdoor traffic signal need?

For most outdoor traffic signals, IP65 is the practical minimum. It is dust-tight and resists the water jets of driving rain and routine cleaning, covering the majority of roadside environments. IP54 may be acceptable for sheltered or indoor applications but is generally insufficient for fully exposed roadside installation.

Harsher environments call for more. Coastal locations with salt spray, sites subject to high-pressure washing or areas with wind-driven dust benefit from IP66. Locations at risk of temporary flooding may justify IP67.

IP rating is about the whole enclosure

The rating applies to the complete sealed unit—housing, lens gasket, cable entries and connectors. A high-rated housing with a poorly sealed cable gland is not truly IP65. When reviewing a product, confirm the rating covers the entire assembled signal, including how the cable enters the enclosure.

How to choose the right IP rating

  • Match the rating to the worst weather the site will see, not the average.
  • Use IP65 as the baseline for general outdoor roadside signals.
  • Step up to IP66/IP67 for coastal, wash-down, dusty or flood-prone sites.
  • Confirm the rating covers the full assembled unit, including cable entries.
  • Ask how the rating is tested and whether a test report is available.

Is IP65 good enough for outdoor traffic lights?

Yes for most installations. IP65 is dust-tight and resists water jets, covering typical roadside rain and cleaning. Harsher environments—coastal, wash-down or flood-prone—may need IP66 or IP67.

What is the difference between IP54 and IP65?

IP54 is dust-protected and resists splashing water; IP65 is fully dust-tight and resists water jets. IP65 offers clearly better protection and is the common minimum for exposed outdoor signals.

Can a traffic light be fully waterproof?

IP67-rated units withstand temporary immersion and are effectively waterproof for flood-prone sites. For continuous submersion a higher IP68 rating would be required, which is uncommon for standard signals.

Does a high IP rating matter in hot, dry climates?

Yes, because the dust digit matters even without heavy rain. Dust-tight (6) enclosures prevent fine dust from coating the LEDs and electronics, which is important in arid and construction environments.
