1. What a controller output actually does

3. When 44-56 outputs are needed

A 4-way intersection with protected left turns, pedestrian phases on every leg and bicycle signals on two legs can use 30 outputs before any spare capacity is reserved. A 56-output controller is then the safer choice, because it leaves spare outputs for future phases, additional detection and communication modules.

Choose 44 or 56 outputs when the intersection has protected left-turn arrows on any approach, pedestrian phases run on three or four legs with audible push buttons, bicycle signals are required, transit signal priority or emergency vehicle preemption is part of the design, the controller will coordinate with neighbouring intersections along a corridor, or future expansion is on the horizon. For corridors and coordinated networks, 56 outputs gives the spare capacity to add overlap phases, transit priority and remote monitoring without replacing the controller.

4. Spare capacity and future expansion

The most common reason controllers are replaced prematurely is that all outputs are in use from day one. Always leave at least 15-20% of outputs free for future turn arrows after a traffic study, additional pedestrian or bicycle phases, detector expansion, communication and monitoring modules, and replacement of a damaged output channel.
