NEMA TS-2: The North American Workhorse
NEMA TS-2 was published in 1992 and has been the dominant US standard for over three decades. It specifies a cabinet shape (the familiar base-mount assembly), a 37-pin connector between the controller and the cabinet, the operating voltage and temperature range, and a minimum set of input/output functions. Most existing US intersections still run TS-2 compatible hardware, so replacement controllers must keep TS-2 compatibility to drop into legacy cabinets.
NEMA TS-2 controllers and cabinets are interchangeable across vendors, which keeps the bidding process competitive and the spare parts supply stable.
ATC 5.2b: The Modern Successor
ATC 5.2b (Advanced Transportation Controller, version 5.2b) is the open-architecture successor to TS-2. It defines the same cabinet envelope but replaces the 37-pin connector with a high-density serial bus that carries more channels at higher speed. ATC supports modern detection inputs (video, radar, connected vehicle data), modern coordination protocols (NTCIP 1202 v03) and modern firmware update workflows.

Caltrans 170/2070: The California Standard

If your project is in California or a state that follows Caltrans, you need a 2070-compatible controller; a TS-2 or ATC controller will not drop into a 170 cabinet without a substantial adapter.
