Traffic Light IP Ratings: IP54 vs IP65 Explained
The IP (Ingress Protection) rating tells you how well a traffic light resists dust and water. For outdoor signals the rating directly affects lifespan, condensation, LED failure and the maintenance bill.

1. How to read an IP rating
An IP rating has two digits. The first digit (0 to 6) rates protection against solid objects and dust; the second digit (0 to 9) rates protection against water. A 6 in the first position means the enclosure is dust-tight, while a 5 in the second position means it withstands water projected from a nozzle.
So IP54 means "protected against limited dust ingress and against splashing water", and IP65 means "dust-tight and protected against water jets". The difference matters a lot when a signal head faces years of rain, road spray and pressure washing.
2. Why IP65 is the practical minimum for traffic lights
Traffic lights are installed outdoors for years, often in open intersections exposed to rain, humidity, dust and exhaust. Moisture inside the housing causes LED corrosion, condensation on the lens, and short circuits. IP65 has become the practical minimum for a durable traffic signal because it keeps dust out entirely and resists water jets.
IP54 is still used on some indoor or semi-sheltered equipment, but for a pole-mounted signal head it leaves less margin for heavy rain and cleaning.
3. IP54 vs IP65 vs IP66: which to choose
Choose IP65 for most intersections and urban roads. Consider IP66 for coastal or desert environments, or where the authority pressure-washes equipment. The higher rating adds sealing cost, so it is only worth paying for when the environment genuinely demands it.
Also confirm that the gasket, cable glands and any screw or hinge seals are rated consistently. A housing marked IP65 can still leak if the cable entry is not sealed with a waterproof gland.
4. IP rating and EN12368 certification
Ingress protection is only one part of compliance. EN12368 is the European product standard for traffic signal heads and covers optical performance, chromaticity, luminance and environmental requirements. A signal can have a high IP rating and still need EN12368 certification for the market you are serving.
When comparing quotations, check the IP rating and the standard on the same line so the comparison is fair.
5. Confirming the rating before ordering
Ask for the rated IP level of the complete signal head including the housing, lens, visor and cable entry, not just the LED module. Request the test report or certification sheet, and confirm the rating applies to the exact voltage and housing material you are buying.
