The controller must not pre-empt into a pedestrian walk. Pedestrian protection is non-negotiable; if a walk is in progress, the preemption waits until the walk and clearance interval are complete.

Detector Mounting and Range

Mount the optical detector on the signal arm or pole facing the approaching emergency lane. Typical range is 200-300 m depending on weather and ambient light. Use a separate detector for each approach that needs preemption. Avoid mounting the detector where direct sunlight can blind it; a hooded mount solves most sunlight problems.

Strobe Light Standards

Use a 14 Hz strobe (the Opticom standard) or the equivalent 1 Hz/14 Hz dual-rate system used by some agencies. Match the strobe frequency and pulse pattern to the detector; mismatched systems will not trigger.
