Traffic Signal Pole Inspection and Maintenance Schedule

Introduction

A traffic signal pole is exposed to wind, vibration, salt, pollution and occasional vehicle impact. Regular inspection catches problems before they become failures. This guide covers the inspection schedule and the maintenance checklist.

Inspection Schedule

Frequency Inspection
Visual inspection: interval set by the asset owner and maintenance plan Visual check for damage, leaning, corrosion
Anchor-bolt inspection: follow the approved maintenance interval and method Torque check on anchor bolts
Galvanizing inspection (interval per maintenance plan) Coating thickness measurement
Foundation inspection: use the interval in the approved maintenance plan; 2 years is not suitable for every site condition. Crack survey around the base
Full structural inspection: set the interval in the approved asset-maintenance plan; a 5-year interval is not suitable for every pole or exposure condition. Complete inspection including ultrasonic testing

GAOQIAO recommends a documented inspection log for every pole, with photos at each visit.

Visual Inspection Checklist

Walk around the pole and check:

  • Lean: record visible changes and assess alignment against the approved design and inspection criteria; investigate suspected movement promptly.
  • Foundation: any cracks, spalling or exposed rebar?
  • Anchor bolts: any visible movement, corrosion or paint missing from the torque mark?
  • Galvanizing: record rust, coating lifting and white corrosion products. Have their significance and any required treatment assessed under the approved inspection criteria; do not assume white oxidation is always acceptable.
  • Signal head mount: any cracks in the head or backplate?
  • Wiring: any chafed cables, missing grommets, or exposed conductors?

Allow sufficient inspection time to check and record all required items

Anchor Bolt Check

Inspect the complete load path, including anchors, base plate, pole and foundation, at the interval specified by the maintenance plan:

  1. Inspect each torque/witness mark for movement and assess the joint under the approved procedure; a displaced mark is a reason for investigation, not proof of a specific failure.
  2. Investigate the cause of loosening and follow the approved inspection and retightening procedure. Confirm the joint and fastener requirements before applying torque; do not use 800-1000 Nm as a universal value for M30 grade 8.8 bolts.
  3. Re-apply the torque mark with a paint pen.

A loose anchor bolt in a critical pole is a safety issue; do not defer.

Foundation Check

Inspect the foundation around the base plate and anchor bolts for cracking, displacement, corrosion staining or other deterioration. Record photographs and measurements, and refer uncertain or changing defects to a qualified structural specialist. Crack width alone is not a reliable basis for classifying damage as cosmetic or structural. Follow the specialist’s assessment and approved measures for continued use, repair or restricting access.

Repair vs Replace

Problem Repair Replace
Surface rust on galvanizing Assess corrosion and repair using the approved coating-restoration method; obtain structural review where section loss is suspected. No
Heavy rust with section loss No Pole
Loose anchor bolt Re-torque No
Foundation cracking: assess extent, change and structural significance against approved criteria. Specialist repair No
Leaning or movement beyond the approved assessment limits Foundation investigation Possibly pole

For a replacement pole, provide GAOQIAO with the existing foundation and anchor drawings and proposed equipment loads. Matching the bolt circle alone does not establish suitability for a direct replacement; obtain the required structural review.

Conclusion

Set pole inspection and anchor-bolt checks according to the approved maintenance plan, structural design and component instructions. Record corrosion, damage, alignment and any required measurements, and refer defects to the responsible personnel. For a replacement pole, confirm the existing foundation, anchor pattern and structural compatibility before ordering. Ask GAOQIAO to confirm the available replacement scope rather than assuming a matching product or maintenance service.

Frequently Asked Questions

How often should I inspect after a major storm?

Follow the authority’s post-storm inspection and response procedure, prioritising suspected damage and public safety.

Can I replace just the anchor bolts without replacing the pole?

Do not assume an existing foundation can accept a new anchor arrangement merely because it appears sound. Have a qualified structural designer assess the concrete, reinforcement, existing anchors, edge distances and required loads. Any anchor modification or replacement must follow an approved design and installation procedure, with the specified inspections and tests before the pole returns to service.

What is the typical pole lifespan?

Service life depends on the specified material and coating, structural loading, corrosion exposure, installation and maintenance. Use the project’s design-life requirements and inspection evidence rather than a universal lifespan for mild, coastal or industrial sites.
