Traffic Light IP Rating IP54 vs IP65 vs IP66: Ingress Protection Guide

Introduction

IP (Ingress Protection) rating tells you how well a traffic light resists dust and water. The wrong rating leads to premature failure; the right rating protects the electronics and extends service life. This guide decodes the IP system and recommends ratings by environment.

The IP System

IP ratings have two digits:

  • First digit (0-6): protection against solid objects and dust
  • Second digit (0-9): protection against water

Read the two IP digits separately: they describe different types of protection. Confirm the exact rating and test conditions required for the installation; do not treat every larger number as interchangeable protection. Common ratings to compare for traffic lights:

  • IP54: dust-protected (limited ingress OK), splashing water
  • IP65: dust-tight, water jets
  • IP66: dust-tight, powerful water jets
  • IP67: dust-tight, temporary immersion (rare for traffic lights)

Confirm the IP rating and supporting test evidence for the selected GAOQIAO signal head. Specify any IP65 or IP66 project requirement in the enquiry.

Assessing Protection Ratings for the Installation Environment

Environment Minimum rating Recommended
Urban temperate IP54 IP65
Urban tropical IP65 IP65
Coastal salt air IP65 IP66
Industrial pollution IP65 IP66
Tunnel IP65 IP65 (with gasket maintenance)
Pressure-washed IP65 IP66

An IP rating and a salt-spray test address different environmental exposures. Request the applicable test report for the selected signal-head configuration and check the test method, duration, acceptance criteria and tested materials before relying on a corrosion-resistance claim.

What the IP Test Means

IP65 testing per IEC 60529:

  • Dust test: confirm the applicable method, duration and acceptance criteria for the claimed IP rating
  • Water-jet protection: verify the claimed IP level against the applicable test standard and full test report, including enclosure configuration, exposure conditions, duration and acceptance criteria.

Request the available test reports for the selected model and confirm their scope, configuration and test conditions. Check whether setup photographs and other supporting records are included.

Field Maintenance

Inspect seals and gaskets according to the equipment instructions, exposure and maintenance plan, including on IP65-rated heads. Agree the inspection interval for the project rather than assuming an annual schedule is sufficient in every environment.

  • Check door gasket for cracks, compression set or detachment
  • Check cable gland seals for tightness
  • Clean drain holes in the bottom of the housing
  • Have a qualified person assess loose fasteners and retighten or replace them according to the approved procedure and specified torque; do not apply an arbitrary torque.

An IP65 rating addresses specified ingress-protection performance; it does not establish a 15-20 year service life. Inspect and maintain seals, cable entries and other components according to the equipment instructions and site conditions. Record defects and required corrective action rather than inferring the remaining life from the IP marking alone.

Featured Products

GAOQIAO supplies IP65 and IP66 signal headswith applicable test reports for the selected model to be confirmed. See theIP ratings guide.

Conclusion

Choose ingress protection from the site exposure and approved cleaning methods. Confirm the selected model’s documented IP rating and complete enclosure configuration with GAOQIAO. Coastal corrosion and condensation need separate assessment; neither IP65 nor IP66 is an automatic choice for every outdoor site.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between IP65 and IP66?

IP66 withstands more powerful water jets. The test nozzle is 12.5 mm vs 6.3 mm, and the water flow is 100 L/min vs 12.5 L/min.

Do I need IP67?

Select ingress protection from the project’s actual exposure, cleaning, flooding risk and equipment requirements. An IP rating alone does not establish suitability for every site. Confirm the relevant test conditions and installation limitations rather than treating IP66 as automatically sufficient whenever normal submersion is not expected.

What happens if the IP rating fails?

Water ingress can corrode circuit boards or other components and lead to failure. The timing and severity depend on exposure, sealing condition and construction; no universal failure period follows a gasket defect. Inspect and repair according to the equipment instructions and site maintenance plan.
