LED Traffic Light Replacement: Choose a Module or a Complete Head

Updated 14 October 2026 · GAOQIAO Traffic Technology

An LED traffic light replacement can involve a new module inside a retained housing or a complete signal head. The better option depends on the condition of the existing equipment, the approved configuration and the interfaces that can be verified.

Start with a condition and documentation review. A working lamp is not evidence that the retained housing, connections and mounting arrangement are suitable for continued service.

Record the existing installation

Collect the model label, approved drawings, maintenance history and photographs of the front, rear and connections. Identify whether the equipment has already been altered. Where information is missing, record the gap instead of inventing a match from the nominal diameter.

The project team should determine whether the existing housing and supports can be retained. The supplier’s task is to provide information about the proposed replacement, not to approve unseen site equipment.

Use a module replacement when the interfaces are established

A module quotation needs the optical opening, module envelope, retaining method, sealing arrangement, cable entry and electrical version. Include the actual indication and any lens or visor arrangement that affects the assembly.

A 300mm description does not identify every mechanical interface. Nor does a matching connector prove electrical compatibility. Request the drawings and input data for the proposed model and compare them with the retained equipment.

Consider a complete head when the retained assembly is uncertain

A complete replacement allows the purchase specification to define the housing, access arrangement and supplied components together. It may be appropriate where records are incomplete, the assembly has deteriorated or the approved configuration is changing.

However, a new head still needs a mounting and electrical review. Confirm whether brackets, cables and connectors are included. Any effect on the retained support should be assessed through the project’s structural and installation process.

Compare the work scope, not only the component price

Record the site work, required access, downtime arrangements, acceptance checks and spare-stock implications for both options. A cheaper module can require more verification work; a complete head can require changes to the mounting arrangement.

Ask the contractor to define a site-work plan appropriate to the road authority’s requirements. Product selection advice should not be used as a live-intersection installation procedure.

Maintain the replacement record

Keep the approved old-to-new mapping with the model, revision, indication and location. Include the supplied electrical drawing and acceptance evidence. Maintenance staff should be able to reorder the correct component without repeating the original investigation.

A replacement enquiry that can be reviewed

Send the existing model label, front and rear photographs, retaining dimensions, sealing arrangement and connector details. Attach the available wiring and supply documentation; similar-looking connectors do not establish an electrical match. Mark unknown fields clearly and obtain written model confirmation.

Prepare the replacement module photo package. If the housing or accessory will also change, review the visor attachment and clearance with the complete assembly.
