Introduction
Anchor bolts connect the pole assembly to its designed foundation. Their location, material, embedment, installation and tightening requirements must follow the approved structural design and component instructions. Misalignment, damage or inadequate installation can compromise the connection. Qualified personnel should document checks and resolve deviations with the responsible designer before the pole is put into service.
The Anchor Bolt Template
The template is a steel frame that holds the anchor bolts in the exact bolt circle pattern during the concrete pour. The template sits on top of the foundation formwork with the bolt threads protruding upward.
Confirm whether an anchor-bolt setting template is included in the pole order and check it against the approved bolt circle, hole pattern, bolt dimensions and projection. A template may be reused only where it remains undamaged and matches the approved foundation details for each location.
Embedment Depth and Hook
Anchor-bolt embedment must be specified by the approved structural design for the actual foundation and loads:
- Anchor embedment: use the approved calculation for the selected anchor, concrete and design loads.
- Anchor embedment must follow the approved structural design, including bolt grade, concrete strength and loading.
- High-load or seismic applications: determine anchor dimensions through the approved structural design.
Anchor-bolt type, embedment, end anchorage and material must follow the approved foundation design. Hooked or headed arrangements are possible where specified, but should not be assumed interchangeable. Confirm the bolt details and setting template supplied for the project before fabrication and placement.
Tolerance
Anchor-bolt position tolerances must follow the approved foundation and base-plate drawings. Use the specified template and inspection method to verify the actual arrangement; generic tolerances do not replace the project design.
- Bolt-circle tolerance: use the approved anchor and base-plate drawings and acceptance criteria.
- Verticality tolerance: use the approved drawing and measurement method
- Projection-height tolerance: use the approved drawing
Set anchor-bolt positions, projection and alignment to the approved base-plate and foundation drawings. Check the secured template before pouring and verify the installed positions using the specified inspection procedure. Acceptance tolerances must come from the project design rather than a universal offset limit.
Torque Specification
Follow the approved anchor-bolt tightening procedure, including any specified stages and inspection records:
- Initial tightening: begin only after the foundation has achieved the strength and other conditions required by the approved design. Follow the specified fastener-installation sequence and inspection method; do not use a universal 7-day curing period or 50% of final torque as the rule.
- Final tightening after pole erection: follow the approved structural design and fastener manufacturer’s specified tightening method. Confirm bolt size, grade, coating, lubrication, joint condition and inspection requirements. Do not apply a generic 800-1000 Nm torque to all M30 grade 8.8 bolts.
Use a calibrated torque wrench, not an impact driver. Mark each bolt after final torque with a paint pen so the maintenance crew can spot loosening.

Conclusion
Confirm the anchor arrangement for the selected pole and approved foundation design. Ask which templates, bolts and installation drawings are included in the GAOQIAO quotation, and verify their dimensions and specifications before delivery. Do not assume that every pole order includes the same anchor package or that a supplied template replaces structural approval.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use the same template for different poles?
Matching bolt circles is necessary but not sufficient. Confirm the complete base-plate, anchor and foundation design, including bolt size, embedment, projection and loads. Check the approved pole-specific template before each pour.
What happens if the template shifts during the pour?
If anchor bolts or templates are found out of position, stop and obtain the responsible structural engineer’s disposition. Do not move anchors in setting concrete or substitute drilled adhesive anchors without an approved repair design and installation procedure. Record the defect, assessment, repair and inspection before loading the foundation.
Can I re-torque anchor bolts after several years?
Retightening must follow the approved anchor-bolt procedure and assessment of the existing joint. Use the specified tool, tightening method and values for the actual bolt condition; do not assume the original installation torque is automatically suitable for maintenance. Excessive tightening can damage the bolt or joint.
