Introduction
The stability of a traffic signal pole depends on the foundation as well as the pole and its connections. Have the responsible structural designer verify concrete requirements, anchor arrangement, foundation depth and site loads using the approved project design. This guide introduces foundation design considerations; it does not establish that a generic detail is safe for every site.
The Three Foundation Types
The following foundation forms are examples for discussion. A qualified structural and geotechnical design must select the foundation for the actual soil, loads, groundwater and installation constraints; the list does not establish suitability for most installations.
- Direct-embed: A direct-embedded pole arrangement requires an approved structural and geotechnical design. Confirm embedment depth, concrete details, soil conditions, loads and corrosion protection for the selected pole. A height below 5 m or apparently good soil does not by itself establish suitability.
- Flange-base with anchor bolts: the pole base is attached to foundation anchors. Confirm the approved foundation, anchor arrangement and structural suitability for the actual pole and loads. This is not a universal requirement for every signal-arm installation.
- Caisson or pile: A deep foundation may be considered where soil conditions or pole loads require it. A qualified structural and geotechnical design must determine suitability, including any bridge connection, bearing-capacity limitation or vibration concern; do not select the foundation type from these examples alone.
Confirm the base and anchor arrangement for the selected signal-arm or double-arm pole against the approved structural design. Ask GAOQIAO which flange-base options and anchor templates are included in the quotation for that model. Do not assume the same base or template supply for every installation.
Concrete Specifications
Typical specifications for a flange-base pole foundation:
- Specify the concrete strength class, test age and acceptance criteria in the approved foundation design under the applicable code. Do not use a universal minimum C25 or treat 25 MPa at 28 days as sufficient for every pole foundation.
- Reinforcement: follow the approved foundation drawing for bar grade, diameter, spacing, cover and cage arrangement; confirm these details with the responsible structural engineer.
- Foundation depth: determine from the approved structural and geotechnical design for the actual pole, arm, equipment and site loads.
- Foundation dimensions and shape must follow the approved structural design for the actual pole, loads and ground conditions; a 600-1000 mm width is not a universal specification.
- Anchor bolts: use the size, strength grade, embedment, material and installation details specified by the approved structural design. Do not apply M30 or M36 grade 8.8 bolts with 800-1000 mm embedment as a universal arrangement.
Foundation depth and concrete strength must be specified by the structural design for the actual pole, arm, equipment, wind conditions and ground investigation. Larger assemblies may increase foundation demands, but pole size alone does not determine an acceptable depth or concrete grade.
Soil Considerations
Foundation sizing must account for soil conditions and all design loads:
- Soft clay: assess bearing, settlement and other relevant ground behaviour through the geotechnical foundation design.
- For sandy soil, obtain a site-specific geotechnical assessment and approved foundation design. Bearing capacity, settlement, groundwater and loads must be considered; do not assume 150-300 kPa or select a pad or belled foundation from the soil name alone.
- Rock: verify rock quality, discontinuities and anchor design through the approved geotechnical and structural assessment; do not assume a smaller foundation is always suitable.
- Fill or disturbed soil: obtain geotechnical assessment and an approved foundation design for the actual ground conditions.
The responsible structural engineer should determine the ground-investigation information required for the pole and foundation design. Consider actual loads, ground variability, groundwater and local rules; do not rely on a universal pole-height or bearing-capacity threshold to decide whether investigation is needed.
Anchor Bolt Pattern
Anchor-bolt positions must match the approved pole base-plate and foundation drawings. Confirm the bolt-circle dimensions, bolt count, tolerances and installation method for the selected design rather than choosing a generic pattern.
- Small-pole base connection: confirm bolt layout and dimensions from the approved structural drawing.
- Bolt count and bolt-circle diameter: use the approved foundation and baseplate drawings for the selected pole.
- For a large pole, use the bolt count and bolt-circle dimensions specified in the approved structural drawings. An arrangement of 8 bolts on a 600-800 mm circle is not a universal design and must be verified for the actual pole, loads and foundation.
Use the anchor template and bolt projection specified in the approved structural drawing for the selected pole and foundation. Verify the grout allowance, base-plate thickness, nuts, washers and installation tolerances. Ask GAOQIAO to confirm the supplied template; do not apply a generic 100-150 mm projection to every installation.

Conclusion
The foundation is an essential part of a stable signal installation. Request the pole layout, anchor bolt template and foundation requirements for the proposed assembly, and confirm which drawings and design services are included in the quotation. Provide the site soil report and selected pole configuration to the responsible structural designer. Do not infer a service-life guarantee from a generic foundation description.

Frequently Asked Questions
How long does concrete take to cure?
Do not load a new pole foundation solely because a fixed number of days has elapsed. Follow the approved foundation design and concrete specification, verify the required strength and obtain the responsible engineer’s release before erecting or loading the pole.
Can I use the pole before the concrete is cured?
Do not load the foundation before it meets the approved curing and strength requirements. Obtain the specified inspection or test evidence and release for loading; a fixed number of days alone is not sufficient.
What if my soil is poor?
Use a pile or caisson foundation, designed by a structural engineer. GAOQIAO can supply the pole and anchor bolts, but the foundation design is the engineer’s responsibility.
