LED Traffic Light Energy Cost: Calculate a Comparable Project Estimate
Updated 12 October 2026 · GAOQIAO Traffic Technology
A useful LED traffic light energy comparison starts with the same installation boundary and operating assumptions for every option. A percentage-saving headline cannot replace measured power data for the proposed configuration.
For procurement, distinguish the consumption of individual indications from the consumption of the complete intersection. Controllers, communications, displays and other equipment may need separate entries in the energy model.
Use input power for the exact version
Ask for power data for each proposed indication and electrical version. Record the supply condition, operating state and whether a dimmed mode is included. A catalogue's maximum rating and a measured operating value serve different purposes; label them accurately.
If several indications operate together, calculate their combined contribution. Do not multiply one lamp's rating by all aspects while also treating every aspect as continuously illuminated unless that reflects the design being evaluated.
Build the calculation from operating hours
A transparent estimate is:
Annual lamp energy in kWh = sum of each indication's watts multiplied by its annual operating hours, divided by 1,000.
For illustration only, assume a single indication consumes 10W for 4,000 hours per year. Its contribution would be 40kWh. At an assumed tariff of US$0.15/kWh, that contribution would cost US$6 per year. These are calculation inputs, not GAOQIAO product ratings or a local electricity quotation.
Repeat the calculation using actual values and the operating plan. Include other loads separately, so reviewers can see which assumptions drive the result.
Compare maintenance and replacement costs separately
An energy estimate is not a lifetime-cost guarantee. Add the purchase scope, installation work, inspection arrangements, access costs, spare stock and replacement assumptions in separate fields.
Where the expected service interval is uncertain, show scenarios rather than presenting one optimistic value as established fact. Keep supplier warranty terms separate from the planning assumption for operational life.
Explain the basis of any savings claim
Specify the reference equipment, its measured or documented consumption, and the operating conditions. Check that the new and old equipment provide the required indication and satisfy the project's acceptance criteria.
If the reference is unavailable, report an absolute estimate for the proposed equipment rather than inventing a reduction percentage. This gives decision-makers a number they can audit and update when better information arrives.
Request a comparable quotation
Ask every supplier to identify what is included in the electrical load and the equipment price. Maintain a revision number on the spreadsheet when the configuration or operating plan changes.
