LED Traffic Light for Adaptive Control: Clarify the Hardware Interface

Updated 12 October 2026 · GAOQIAO Traffic Technology

An LED traffic light can be part of an adaptive intersection, but replacing the signal head does not by itself create adaptive control. Procurement teams need to separate field indications from the controller, detection inputs, communications and operating software.

Intertraffic Amsterdam 2026 included a programme session on real-time adaptive signal control. Its relevance for hardware procurement is the need to define system responsibilities clearly. The event programme does not establish compatibility between a particular controller and an LED head. See the Intertraffic session.

Separate the purchasing layers

Create distinct schedule items for signal heads, controller equipment, detection devices, communications and software or services. Name the party responsible for system integration and commissioning.

This allows a buyer to replace a field component without confusing the component’s capabilities with those of the overall control system. It also makes exclusions visible when several suppliers contribute to the same intersection.

Define the controller-to-head interface

Request the output specification of the existing or proposed controller and the input specification of the exact LED traffic light version. Record supply type, operating range, terminal arrangement and any relevant dimming, monitoring or diagnostic requirement.

A description such as “works with intelligent controllers” is insufficient. The project team should determine what evidence and integration checks are necessary for the actual pairing. A manufacturer’s general product family should not be treated as a universal compatibility list.

Identify behaviour that needs a system decision

List the operating states the project requires the integration team to review. These may include commanded indications, dimming and the handling of an output or supply problem. Agree who defines the expected behaviour and who verifies it.

Do not infer safe behaviour from a lamp illuminating on a bench. The controller, associated monitoring equipment and site operating arrangements all belong in the acceptance plan.

Keep countdown displays on their own interface record

Where a countdown is included, confirm how it obtains timing information and how it behaves when timing changes. The presence of a numerical display does not establish that it can follow every adaptive operating mode.

Record the display version, interface documentation and the system provider’s acceptance criteria. Leave unresolved combinations out of a final order until the technical review is complete.

Build a usable handover package

Deliver an approved equipment schedule, electrical drawings, model references, software responsibility list and commissioning records. Maintenance staff should be able to identify the field hardware without reconstructing the original tender discussion.
