A pedestrian LED traffic light is one component of a crossing. The visual indication, request button, any countdown display, accessible features and controller operation need a coordinated specification.
Inclusive mobility was among the themes reported by the organiser of Intertraffic Amsterdam 2026. For a purchasing team, the practical response is to define the complete crossing requirements and review each interface, rather than treating a pedestrian symbol as a complete accessibility solution. See the official event review.
Establish the authority-approved crossing arrangement
Identify the required symbols, colours, display size and orientation from the approved design. Record the destination and responsible authority. Requirements should be reviewed for that project; do not assume that one catalogue configuration is suitable in every market.
Where a crossing serves several movements or approaches, use location references to distinguish the equipment. This prevents packing labels and installation schedules from losing the intended orientation.
Define the button and accessible equipment separately
State the required button function and the scope of any audible, tactile or other accessible features. Identify the party responsible for selecting and integrating those features.
A visual LED display does not establish that the crossing meets all accessibility requirements. If accessible equipment is supplied by a different company, include its interface and commissioning responsibilities in the schedule.
Review countdown operation against the controller
Ask how the proposed countdown receives timing information and what operating modes it supports. Confirm the expected behaviour when timing or operating mode changes.
A countdown that looks correct during one demonstration is not proof that it will operate correctly with every controller configuration. Record the model pairing, documentation and project acceptance criteria before purchase approval.
Compare the complete supply boundary
List which items are included: signal head, visor, brackets, button assembly, countdown, cables, connectors or other accessories. Compare drawings and electrical data, not only promotional images.
For replacement work, inspect and document the interfaces of any retained components. Reusing a bracket or button can change the scope of the installation review even when the new visual display is the same nominal size.
Plan the handover for maintenance staff
Request equipment references, drawing revisions, agreed acceptance records and the component list needed for future maintenance. Keep the controller configuration and accessible-equipment information available to the team responsible for the crossing.
Describe inspection responsibilities explicitly. Routine visual inspection, electrical verification and operating checks may involve different people and methods; they should not be collapsed into a single statement that the crossing has been tested.
