How do LED traffic signal lights work?

From a controller command to a visible indication

The display and the control decision have different jobs

The visible signal head presents the specified colour or symbol. The controller decides when each output is commanded as part of the configured traffic sequence. The connection between them must match the selected equipment, including the supply arrangement and any required interface. A countdown display or pedestrian request unit may introduce additional connections and configuration requirements.

Describe a system by its actual components rather than by one broad label such as “LED traffic light”. A head, controller, detector and power supply may be purchased separately. Listing these items makes it easier to confirm who supplies each part and which combinations have been reviewed together.

Why wiring and configuration both matter

A correct-looking red, yellow and green display does not by itself prove that a complete installation is operating as intended. The responsible installer needs the model-specific terminal information, approved signal arrangement and controller settings. Keep those documents together so the physical connections can be compared with the intended sequence.

For a retrofit, document the existing head and controller before selecting a replacement. Include labels, supply details and a clear wiring drawing. Do not infer a compatible interface solely from connector shape or the number of wires. Confirm any dimming, countdown or communication function that the project expects.

What a buyer should request

Ask for a drawing of the supplied configuration, the relevant electrical data, operating instructions and the agreed test or inspection record. Specify whether the purchase includes brackets, visors, cable fittings and spare modules. These details establish what will arrive and what still needs to be provided on site.

During handover, record the installed models and configuration revisions. If a display behaves unexpectedly, collect the observed indication, controller state and model information for the maintenance team. Follow the responsible operator’s procedures; a general product explanation cannot determine the cause of a live traffic-system fault.
