What to confirm before selecting a controller

Describe the movements and connected equipment

Begin with a layout of the junction, crossing, gate or temporary work area. Identify which vehicle and pedestrian movements need separate control and which inputs are required, such as a push button or vehicle detector. The purchasing description should also identify the signal heads, countdown displays and other connected devices.

An output count is only one selection detail. Ask how outputs are assigned, which loads they can operate and whether the proposed configuration supports the required operating sequence. A larger output count alone does not establish compatibility with an existing cabinet or a particular traffic plan.

Define the electrical and communication boundaries

Provide the available supply voltage and the signal-load details. Separate the controller’s own supply from the voltage used by the connected lamps. For an existing installation, share a legible terminal diagram and the controller model so the proposed wiring arrangement can be checked before equipment is shipped.

For a wireless or coordinated system, specify the role of each unit, the proposed installation layout and the information that must pass between devices. Confirm the exact interface and operating mode with the supplier; the terms “wireless”, “solar” or “smart” do not define a complete communication specification.

Agree the handover documents

Request the configuration-specific wiring diagram, operating instructions and list of supplied accessories. Identify who prepares the timing plan, who commissions the system and who will retain the approved settings. Include the required response to abnormal conditions in the project acceptance checklist.

Before installation, compare model labels and terminal markings with the documentation. A controlled demonstration of the agreed functions can help resolve configuration questions, but it does not replace site approval or commissioning by the responsible traffic-system professional. Keep the accepted settings and equipment list available for future maintenance.
