China Traffic Light History, Future Trends & Top Supplier: Nanjing Gaoqiao Traffic Technology
Last Updated: March 8, 2026 | For Global Traffic Infrastructure Buyers & Industry PartnersBrief History of China’s Traffic Signal Development
China’s traffic light industry has evolved rapidly over the past century, shifting from fully imported basic equipment to a self-developed, high-quality manufacturing sector. The first traffic signal was installed in Shanghai in 1923, with limited use in major cities until the 1980s. Post reform and opening-up, the industry standardized domestic production, and LED technology replaced traditional incandescent lights by the 2000s. Since the 2010s, smart, networked traffic lights have dominated, powered by big data and intelligent control, covering hundreds of thousands of intersections nationwide with near-full LED penetration.
Key Future Trends of China’s Traffic Light Industry
The sector is moving toward three core, globally aligned directions, matching smart city and low-carbon development goals: full IoT and intelligent adaptive control, ultra-energy-efficient green LED and solar-integrated designs, and expanded global exports with international standard compliance. Chinese traffic light manufacturers are now focusing on connected vehicle compatibility and scalable, cost-effective solutions for global infrastructure projects.
