A buying guide to traffic-signal LED options

Package names do not rank complete signals

DIP, SMD, COB and flip-chip terminology describes different aspects of LED construction or assembly. These labels are useful when discussing a design, but they do not establish a universal ranking for price, service life, optical output or weather resistance. Assess the complete proposed traffic-signal module and the conditions under which its performance is documented.

Begin with the project’s required indication, lens size, electrical supply and installation arrangement. Identify the exact model and configuration offered for each option. A comparison should not mix the performance of an individual LED component with that of a finished head containing optics, a driver, an enclosure and connections.

Compare the evidence on the same basis

Ask for the selected assembly’s input-power data and the optical or environmental evidence required by the project. Check the test configuration and conditions. If a supplier claims a lifetime or an energy saving, ask what is being measured, how the figure was established and whether it applies to the offered assembly.

Review thermal management and service arrangements through the model documentation. Ask what parts can be replaced, which modules are compatible and how the proposed option affects maintenance. Avoid selecting from a table of generic package lifetimes or assuming that a higher component price automatically provides a longer-lived signal.

Turn the comparison into an order specification

List the accepted module, driver or supply arrangement, optical configuration and housing reference. Include the required symbols, mounting details and supplied accessories. If several alternatives are quoted, keep each one tied to its own data sheet and drawing revision.

For a retrofit, provide the existing dimensions, terminal information and controller details. Confirm the complete replacement interface before purchasing a batch. The suitable option is the documented configuration that meets the installation’s requirements and can be supported with identified replacement parts.
