Standards Are Not a Substitute for Local Approval

Specifications may reference performance, electrical, environmental or accessibility standards. However, the road authority or project owner usually defines the final requirements for signal meanings, symbols, dimensions, control operation and acceptance testing.

For export projects, identify the destination-market requirements at the beginning of the procurement process rather than after product selection.

Define the Signal Configuration

Document the required colours, symbols, aspects, diameter, housing arrangement, mounting method and operating voltage. Also define whether the project includes pedestrian signals, bicycle signals, countdown displays, lane-control indications or solar power.

Clear drawings and a schedule of signal movements reduce ambiguity during manufacturing, installation and commissioning.

Plan Documentation and Testing

Ask suppliers to provide the documents required by the specification, such as drawings, product data, operating information and relevant test evidence. For larger projects, agree on inspection points, sample approval and commissioning records before production begins.
