Introduction
Should you buy LED or incandescent traffic lights? For nearly every new project, the answer is LED — but the reasons go far beyond “LEDs last longer.” This comparison covers energy, lifespan, visibility, cost and maintenance so you can justify the decision to a council, contractor, or procurement team.
LED and incandescent signal equipment should be compared using the selected models’ measured power, maintained optical performance, replacement needs and purchase price. Calculate lifecycle cost for the actual operating schedule and maintenance conditions; do not assume a universal energy-saving percentage, service-life multiplier or payback.
LED vs Incandescent: Quick Comparison
| Factor | Compare the selected LED and incandescent equipment |
|---|---|
| Lamp life | Check the stated life criterion, test conditions and replacement limits; rated LED life is not automatically complete-unit life. |
| Energy use | Use measured input power, active-state duration and ancillary losses. |
| Heat output | Compare thermal behaviour at the specified ambient temperature and enclosure conditions. |
| Maintained brightness | Check photometric test evidence and maintenance thresholds rather than assuming unchanged output over life. |
| Color consistency | Verify chromaticity against the required specification and operating conditions. |
| Maintenance | Compare the documented inspection, cleaning and replacement tasks for the actual site. |
| Upfront cost | Compare quotations with the same equipment scope, installation hardware and required documents. |
| Total cost of ownership | Calculate energy, maintenance, replacement and purchase costs over the same assessment period. |
Energy Consumption: The Biggest Saving
For a 300mm (12-inch) comparison, obtain the actual electrical input for each selected incandescent lamp and LED module. Add the power of the indications active in each operating state and apply their duty times; include controller, detector and backup-system losses where relevant. This gives an auditable energy comparison without treating generic wattage ranges as product specifications.
For a network of 500 signalized intersections, calculate annual energy cost using the measured load, operating hours and local electricity tariff for each intersection type. Compare maintenance visits and backup-energy requirements separately using the same service assumptions; the number of intersections alone does not establish the saving.
Lifespan and Maintenance
Compare incandescent lamps and LED modules using model-specific life definitions and operating conditions. Keep operating hours distinct from calendar time, and account for duty cycle and replacement criteria rather than assuming a universal lamp life.Verify the selected model’s documented life rating and operating conditions; 50,000-100,000 hours is not a universal service-life guarantee., with service life assessed for the actual intersection duty cycle. See ourLED traffic light lifespan guide for the factors that influence real-world life.
Fewer failures mean fewer lane closures, fewer crew callouts and less traffic disruption. A single relamping visit can cost more than the lamp itself when you count crew time, traffic control and safety equipment. This is why lifecycle cost, not unit price, is the number that matters.
Brightness and Visibility
Compare colour and maintained luminous intensity using the selected equipment’s test evidence and operating conditions. LED optical design can shape light distribution, but glare control and resistance to sunlight-induced phantom indications must be verified for the complete optical assembly. For incandescent equipment, include the lamp, lens condition and maintenance history in the comparison.
For operation in direct sunlight, review the LED module, lens and louver assembly against the required visibility and optical performance. Confirm the relevant test evidence and assess the intended viewing distance and background; a general description of component quality does not establish compliance for the installed signal.
Upfront Cost vs Total Cost of Ownership
Compare the purchase price of LED heads with their operating energy and maintenance costs. Payback depends on the actual installation, usage, energy tariff and replacement assumptions:
- Calculate annual energy savings from the measured or documented power and operating hours of the compared systems; an 80-90% saving is not guaranteed for every installation.
- Estimate lamp-replacement labour from documented component life, operating conditions and the maintenance plan.
- Fewer replacement lamps and disposal costs
- Smaller UPS or generator requirements for backup power
Calculate payback from the actual purchase-price difference, operating hours, energy tariff, maintenance and replacement assumptions. State the comparison period and costs included. Do not assume a universal 1-3 year payback or describe all later operation as pure savings.
When Incandescent Still Appears
Existing incandescent installations may be considered for LED conversion, but a retrofit module is not automatically compatible with the original housing, wiring or controller. Verify dimensions, mounting, supply, load monitoring, optical performance and approvals for the selected combination before ordering. Consult the relevant product information:traffic light controller guide explains the interfaces).
Upgrading to LED Signal Heads
Ask GAOQIAO to confirm the available complete signal heads and retrofit LED modules for the required size and configuration. For the selected model, verify the driver or power-supply specification, enclosure protection, lens material and any supporting test or conformity documents. Do not assume that all sizes and versions share the same driver certification, ingress protection or UV performance, or that those features alone establish service life.

Why Choose GAOQIAO
Nanjing Gaoqiao Traffic Technology Co., Ltd. has manufactured traffic signals since 2006. Our LED heads meet EN 12368, CE and RoHS requirements, and we support OEM/ODM projects with custom configurations for local traffic rules and standards.
Conclusion
Compare an LED upgrade with the existing equipment using evidence for input power, operating schedule, light performance, maintenance and expected replacement needs. Evaluate total cost over a stated period, not unit price alone. Include installation, energy and maintenance assumptions and identify their sources. Do not assume that every LED option is superior on every measure or that a generic comparison proves a particular project’s savings.
