Describe the complete optical unit

LED package terms such as DIP, SMD and COB describe aspects of the light-source construction. They do not, by themselves, specify the complete traffic signal’s optical performance, enclosure protection, service life or suitability for a road project. Compare the finished module or head and the evidence for the proposed configuration.

Start with the indication required by the project: a circular display, directional arrow, pedestrian symbol or countdown arrangement. Then confirm the lens size, supply, mounting and controller interface. These details define the equipment the buyer needs, while the LED package is one part of its construction.

Ask for comparable performance information

Request the selected model’s data sheet and the optical, electrical and environmental evidence required by the project. Compare measurements made under equivalent conditions. A general statement that one LED package is brighter, more efficient or more weatherproof than every alternative is not a substitute for model-specific results.

If a supplier offers more than one light-source option, ask what changes in the complete assembly: optics, driver, thermal arrangement, dimensions, power input or service parts. Identify which documented configuration corresponds to the quoted option. Avoid comparing the power of an individual LED with the input power of a finished signal head.

Plan compatibility and maintenance

For a retrofit, provide the existing module dimensions, wiring and mounting details. Confirm whether the proposal replaces only the optical module or the whole head. Ask which spare parts will match the approved configuration and whether a later replacement requires a particular driver or connector.

Use the final drawing, data sheet and supplied-parts list as the purchase reference. The practical choice is the documented assembly that meets the installation’s requirements, rather than a universal ranking of LED package names.
