How to identify the relevant signal standard
Separate signal heads, controllers and complete systems
Different documents address different parts of a traffic-signal installation. A signal-head specification should not be described as a controller specification, and a document covering a system should not be reduced to a generic LED light-source requirement. Start by identifying exactly which equipment is being purchased and what the project owner requires.
For example, the BSI catalogue identifies BS EN 12368:2024 as “Traffic control equipment. Signal heads”. BS EN 50556:2018 is titled “Road traffic signal systems”. These titles describe distinct scopes. Their applicability, required classes and accepted editions must be established for the actual project; listing a standard number on a product page is not evidence of conformity.
Use the project specification as the purchasing reference
Ask for the required standard and edition, the relevant performance requirements and the acceptance procedure. Identify whether the order concerns a complete head, optical unit, controller or another assembly. Keep local authority requirements and tender-specific provisions in the review rather than assuming that one international reference answers every question.
For United States projects, use the current FHWA MUTCD entry point and the requirements adopted by the responsible authority. The MUTCD is a traffic-control-device reference; a general website statement does not establish approval of a particular supplied model or installation.
Match the evidence to the offered configuration
Request the relevant reports and documentation for the exact model and configuration being quoted. Compare the applicant or manufacturer, product identifier, standard, report date and tested configuration. Ask about any differences in lenses, supply voltage, housing or components between the document and the proposed order.
Record unresolved requirements before the quotation is accepted.
