"How much does a traffic light cost?" is usually the first question buyers ask—and the hardest to answer with a single number. A 200 mm red ball signal and a solar-powered 4-aspect countdown system are both "traffic lights," but their prices differ by an order of magnitude. Why there is no single "traffic light price"

A traffic signal is a configured product, not a commodity. Two signals that look similar in a photo can contain very different LED modules, housings, controllers and certifications. The honest answer to "how much does it cost" is always "it depends on the specification"—which is why serious manufacturers ask for your requirements before quoting.

The factors below explain roughly where the money goes and which choices move the price most.

The main cost factors

1. Signal size and number of aspects

Physical size is the most visible cost driver. A 200 mm (8-inch) signal head uses fewer LEDs and less housing material than a 300 mm (12-inch) or 400 mm unit. The number of aspects—single, 2-aspect, 3-aspect or 4-aspect—multiplies the LED modules, housings and wiring in a single unit. A 4-aspect signal costs substantially more than a single aspect of the same diameter.

2. LED type and optical quality

The LED module is the heart of the signal and a major cost variable. Higher-grade LEDs deliver better luminous intensity, tighter viewing angle control and longer rated life. Meeting a specific standard—such as EN 12368 intensity classes or ITE chromaticity requirements—requires better LEDs and more precise optics, which raises the cost but is often mandatory for public road projects.

3. Housing material and build

Polycarbonate housings are lighter and corrosion-proof; aluminum housings offer higher mechanical strength and heat dissipation. Wall thickness, UV stabilization, gasket quality and the IP rating of the enclosure all affect cost. A cheap housing that cracks or fades in two years costs more over its life than a well-made one.

4. Power supply: grid vs solar

A mains-powered signal is the baseline. A solar-powered traffic light adds a photovoltaic panel, battery, charge controller and often a larger pole or enclosure—significantly increasing the system price. The solar premium pays for itself where trenching and grid connection are expensive or impossible.

5. Controller and intelligence

A simple fixed-time signal needs minimal control electronics. A system with a countdown timer, vehicle detection, wireless synchronization, adaptive timing or remote monitoring adds controller hardware and software. Each layer of intelligence adds cost but can reduce labor and energy over the system's life.

6. Certification and testing

Certified products cost more because certification itself costs money—laboratory testing, documentation and factory audits. A signal tested to EN 12368 or an equivalent standard carries that cost in its price, but it is often a legal requirement for public tenders. Uncertified product is cheaper upfront and far more expensive if it fails an inspection.

7. Order volume and customization

Unit price drops with volume because tooling, setup and testing costs are spread across more units. Custom colors, voltages, logos, mounting hardware or national configurations add engineering and setup cost, especially on small orders. A customized 50-piece order has a much higher per-unit cost than a standard 1,000-piece run.

How to compare quotes fairly

When two quotes differ widely, compare them on the same specification. Check the LED intensity class, housing material and IP rating, warranty length, whether certification is included and what the controller actually does. A quote that looks cheaper may simply be quoting a lower specification.

Also factor in the total cost of ownership: energy consumption, expected LED life, spare-part availability and the cost of a premature failure in the field. The cheapest unit price is rarely the cheapest decade of operation.
