Documenting the interfaces in a traffic-control system

Make the system boundary visible

Prepare a block diagram showing the power supply, controller, signal heads and any detectors or request units. Mark which items are included in the supply package and which belong to the existing installation. Add cabinets, communication equipment and supporting power components when they are part of the project.

For every connection, identify the relevant electrical or communication interface and the document that defines it. Terms such as “wireless control” or “detector input” describe a function but do not establish that two particular devices can work together. Confirm the proposed combination before procurement.

Define the handover information

Keep the approved equipment list, terminal drawing, configuration reference and operating instructions together. Identify the party responsible for programming, installation and commissioning. Where the project requires a particular response to a fault or loss of communication, include that requirement in the acceptance plan.

For future maintenance, record the installed model and revision for each major component. A replacement should be checked against these interfaces and the accepted configuration. This helps avoid a visually similar signal or controller being ordered without the information needed to integrate it correctly.
