PP Traffic Lights: Pros, Cons & Top Supplier for Global Buyers

PP means polypropylene; PC means polycarbonate. They are different material designations and should not be used interchangeably in a traffic-signal quotation. This guide explains how to review a proposed PP housing, compare the complete assembly and request useful supplier documentation before selecting a model.

Potential advantages and practical limits

PP can be considered when a buyer is comparing non-metallic housing options. Weight and price may be purchasing considerations, but compare the assembled signal rather than a resin name. Ask for the finished unit’s weight and a quotation for the same diameter, number of sections, optical configuration and mounting hardware. A lower shell price does not necessarily mean a lower installed or maintained cost.

A PP shell does not establish the performance of its hinges, screws, brackets, seals or cable entries. These parts should be reviewed together. The same applies to outdoor suitability: the exact resin grade, stabilisation, housing design and model-specific evidence matter more than a broad claim that a material is suitable for every climate.

Confirm the material and outdoor evidence

Request the material designation on the drawing and the proposed resin’s technical datasheet. Ask whether UV or heat stabilisation is specified for that grade. Match the material declaration to the quoted housing model rather than relying on information for an unrelated sample.

For the quoted signal model, request the evidence required by the project for weather exposure, temperature, impact and enclosure protection. A resin datasheet is useful material information, but it does not replace evidence for the complete signal assembly. Do not infer a service life, an IP rating or a road-authority approval from the letters PP alone.

Check fit, electrical configuration and spare parts

• Mechanical fit: compare housing dimensions, bracket centres, visor depth, door clearance and cable entry with the installation drawing.
• Signal configuration: confirm the indication diameter, symbols, colours, section count and the required optical documentation.
• Electrical fit: identify the supply voltage, terminals and controller interface for the complete model; housing material does not determine these values.
• Maintenance: ask how replacement doors, visors, gaskets, brackets and LED modules are identified and ordered.

Compare supplier proposals on the same basis

Send each supplier the same specification and compare the drawing, material declaration, supplied accessories, applicable test evidence, packing and delivery terms. Where a replacement must fit existing equipment, request a representative sample and check it before ordering the full quantity. Keep the approved configuration and parts references with the purchase record.
